An inspiring resource for learning numeracy
Visit the youcubed website led by Professor Jo Boaler from Stanford University to explore different approaches to teaching mathematics
Numeracy Focus: All
The world-renowned youcubed project is led by Professor Jo Boaler from Stanford University, who many teachers will recognise for her work with growth mindsets in mathematics (see Jo’s inspirational TED Talk).
The project aims to encourage students to see Mathematics as a beautiful, open, creative, and multi-dimensional subject.
While the site has an explicit mathematics curriculum focus, it is underpinned by numeracy, grounded in real-world contexts with an emphasis on the development of students’ number sense.
There are many different resources for teachers to help students develop numerical fluency, such as Fluency without Fear which summarises the damage caused by timed tests, and shows ways to teach number facts conceptually and with student enjoyment.
The Number Talks video is an extract from Boaler’s online class How to Learn Math for Teachers showcasing the important pedagogical strategy of number talks.
Fractions with Sense-Making is a video of an inspiring teacher – Cathy Humphreys – teaching fractions to middle school students.
There are a large number of low access/high ceiling tasks for students at all levels from Birth to Level 10, although many are concentrated on the middle school years.
Additional resources are available for parents.
